Neville gave away the free-kick with a needless handball, and Ribery punished the veteran's lapse in concentration to the full extent when his tame free-kick made its way through the wall and in via a deflection off Rooney.
United responded briefly and almost pulled themselves back in front completely against the run of play when Nemanja Vidic rattled the crossbar with a bullet header from Ryan Giggs corner.
But still they looked vulnerable at the back and, in a finale reminiscent of that in 1999 when United came from a goal down in injury time to beat Bayern to the Champions League trophy at the Nou Camp, the hosts had saved their most dramatic moment until the last.
Evra was the guilty party, dallying on the ball and allowing Olic to steal in, drive into the box, and clip past Van der Sar to send the home fans into raptures.
With Bayern players celebrating, meanwhile, Rooney was being helped from the field.
United can ill afford to lose Rooney at this vital stage of the season - and England coach Fabio Capello will also be concerned with the World Cup just over two months away.

KUALA LUMPUR: It was lights off by 8.30pm at the Petronas Twin Towers and the buildings around it as Malaysia observed 2010 Earth Hour.
All non-essential lights at Suria KLCC, including the retail centre’s facade, were turned off for a full 60 minutes.
Many retailers and restaurants also joined hands in the global conservation effort and patrons were seen dining by candlelight.
By 7.45pm, thousands of people had already converged at the compounds of Suria KLCC eagerly waiting for the lights of the twin towers to be switched off.
There was a loud cheer as the lights went off section by section, starting with the upper section of the towers.
A group of six college students who were among the thousands who came to observe the moment carried tea-light candles, arranged in the shape of the figure “60” to symbolise the Earth Day hour-long lights-out.
Meanwhile, in support of the effort, TNB is advising its 7.6 million customers to switch to energy-efficient appliances.
Its chief executive officer Datuk Seri Che Khatib Mohammad Noh urged consumers to switch off electrical appliances when not in use.
The 2009 Earth Hour saw a 550MW dip in nationwide electricity consumption.
The amount is sufficient to light up 14 million 40-watt light bulbs.
Another organisation which joined the 2010 Earth Hour was Petronas. It switched off non-essential lights during the hour.
In George Town, thousands of bulbs lighting up City Hall were switched off, but the Esplanade was alight with flames from 10,000 flickering candles.
Hundreds of people gathered at the field to celebrate the green initiative while others participated by turning off non-essential lights at their homes and businesses.
Crowds also gathered at several different spots in the state to participate in the global Earth Hour.
The lights at the two iconic triangular structures at the mid-span of the Penang Bridge were also switched off.

KUALA TERENGGANU: A local bidder forked out more than RM150,000 for the registration number TAX 1 last November.
Terengganu Road Transport Department (JPJ) director Abdul Rahman Emang Anyie said yesterday the bidder was a businessman here but declined to divulge any more details about him.
Tender documents for the “TAX 1 to TAX 999” registration number ended on Nov 3, and the department received an overwhelming response for all the 1,000 numbers that were tendered.
However, the registration number “TAN 1” still holds the record for the highest bid after a businessman from Johor Baru paid RM200,000 to own the number.
On another matter, Abdul Rahman said his men had successfully detected traffic violators by posing as road users and passengers of public transportation services since February.
He said the 506 offences were recorded, while 257 cases of motorists beating the traffic lights were caught on the spot.
Abdul Rahman said the officers had snapped pictures of the traffic offenders, and summonses would be sent to them.
He said motorcyclists and pillion riders also formed the majority of offenders. Some 150 were captured on film for not wearing crash helmets.
“We will continue with the undercover operation as it has proven effective,” he added.

PUTRAJAYA: The Federal Court ruled on Tuesday that Datuk Seri Dr Zambry Abd Kadir is the rightful Perak Mentri Besar.
The decision was read out by Chief Judge of Malaya Tan Sri Arifin Zakaria, who sat with Court of Appeal President Tan Sri Alauddin Mohd Sheriff and Federal Court judges Datuk Zulkefli Ahmad Makinudin, Datuk Wira Ghazali Mohd Yusoff and Datuk Abdull Hamid Embong.
The bench ruled that the Court of Appeal was right in reversing the High Court ruling.
The apex court held that if a mentri besar refused to resign, his office was deemed to have been vacated.
The bench ruled that the vote of no confidence could be determined by other means than by the Perak Assembly.
It was the final step in the appeal by former Pakatan Rakyat Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Mohammad Nizar Jamaluddin to reclaim the Mentri Besar's post.
However, the losing party in the case can apply to the Federal Court to review its own ruling under Rule 137 of the Rules of the Federal Court to challenge the matter on constitutional points.
A calm looking Nizar told reporters that the decision was “not unexpected” and that he and his team would need to study the written judgement before deciding what to do next.
The conflict over who was the rightful Mentri Besar arose last year after three Pakatan assemblymen quit their parties to become independent state assemblymen, leaving Pakatan and Barisan with 28 assemblymen each in the 59-seat Perak legislative assembly.
The Sultan of Perak then named Dr Zambry the Mentri Besar of Perak.
Nizar took the matter to the High Court which ruled in his favour. Dr Zambry, however, got a stay of judgement and went to the Court of Appeal which overturned the High Court ruling.
Nizar then appealed to the Federal Court.
Dr Zambry, who was not in court, later told reporters that the court's decision would allow Barisan Nasional to continue working for the people.
Later Tuesday Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak said that it was time to work for the development of the state.
"Any unhappiness with Barisan running the state can be raised at the next elections,” he said.
Meanwhile, Dr Zambry's lawyers came out of the court room waving happily to the crowd.
Supporters of both sides erupted into shouting slogans with Dr Zambry supporters chanting 'Hidup BN' while Nizar's supporters shouted 'tipu, Zambry penakut, MB haram.'
Earlier, supporters of both Dr Zambry and Nizar had gathered outside the court as early as 7am with some of them shouting ‘bubar DUN’ and ‘hidup rakyat’.
FRU personnel had a tough time managing the crowd. In the end, Dr Zambry’s supporters were kept to the left while Nizar’s supporters moved to the right of the area leading to the court room.

These athletes put themselves before their fans, teammates and sport more than any of their contemporaries during the past decade. To make this list you had to have been, or currently be, a superstar in sports whose status on the field was matched or surpassed at some point by your arrogance. Also, the media or your peers had to have been compliant in helping build your phony image. I am not going to pretend this is a scientific study. It was compiled purely from Internet searches and my memory of who duped the general public into creating the most phony image. In other words, the ability of these athletes to create an image that Madison Ave and TV loves was only matched by their selfishness, boozing, womanizing or cheating. A ranking of 1 means the athlete is The Most Arrogant.

WYTHEVILLE, Virginia: An armed man in a wheelchair took five hostages Wednesday at a post office in western Virginia, forcing officials to cordon off three blocks of a downtown filled with holiday shoppers.
Shots were fired, but there were no reports of injuries. The man made no demands other than to ask for a pizza, said Pete Rendina, spokesman for the U.S. Postal Inspection Service.
Virginia State Police sent in a SWAT team and a bomb technician, and police at the scene told the Wytheville Enterprise newspaper that the man had five pounds of a common plastic explosive strapped to his chest. State police spokeswoman Corinne Geller would not confirm that.
Susan Holman, manager of a store across the street, said officers told employees to leave the building because there was a man with explosives in the post office.
"The officer told us the man had enough explosives to take out the whole block," Holman told the Enterprise.
Mayor Trent Crewe told The Associated Press five hostages were in the building, including three employees and two customers.
Carlton Austin said his daughter, postal worker Margie Austin, was among the hostages. She managed to call a family friend and said she was fine. Later, her father said, family members were waiting to hear more.
"That's all we can do," he said.
Niki Oliver told the Enterprise that her brother, Jimmy Oliver, was one of the hostages and had been able to phone family members.
"We love you," she yelled to him as his mother was speaking to him on the phone.
Niki Oliver said her brother went to the post office to mail a Christmas gift to his son.
Postal worker Walt Korndoerfer said he was in the post office when he heard shots and a co-worker ran past. He called police and then ran himself.
His wife, Christine Korndoerfer, said he called to tell her he had gotten out safely.
"My husband is not one to get upset," she said. "When he called, I don't think I've ever heard him so upset."
Town manager Wayne Sutherland, speaking from his office four blocks from the scene, said dozens of officers had circled the freestanding, brick post office.
"It's completely surrounded by police in every direction," Sutherland said. "All I can see is blue lights."
Rendina said the man was in a wheelchair and missing part of his leg, but he had no other information.
Sutherland said the streets of the town of 8,500 were filled with holiday shoppers. "It's Christmas and all the stores are busy," he said. - AP

Manchester United's pursuit of the Premier League title suffered a humiliating setback with a thrashing at Craven Cottage inspired by Bobby Zamora.Danny Murphy opened the scoring from 30-yards after capitalising on a blunder by Paul Scholes and Zamora continued his rich vein of form with the second a minute after the interval.
It was Zamora's fifth goal in four games and a player who was the target of jeers from his own fans just three weeks ago heard his name chanted as he left the pitch to a standing ovation.
The former West Ham marksman - a menace all afternoon - had helped complete the rout of the champions by setting-up the third for Damien Duff in the 76th minute.
Just as worrying for an abysmal United side as their second Premier League defeat in three games was the knowledge they were overwhelmed in every department.
Lacking in imagination and confidence, their crippling injury list has clearly caught up with them as they missed the chance to draw level with Chelsea at the top of the table and suffered a fifth loss of the season.
Nemanja Vidic's failure to recover from a calf strain forced Sir Alex Ferguson to once again field a makeshift defence, which was repeatedly exposed by Fulham.
With Jonny Evans, John O'Shea, Gary Neville, Rio Ferdinand and Wes Brown in the treatment room, Michael Carrick, Darren Fletcher and Ritchie De Laet were asked to form a flimsy three-man rearguard.
Wayne Rooney and Michael Owen started in attack but the latter was anonymous and even when Dimitar Berbatov stepped off the bench in the second half they were toothless.
The result has strengthened Fulham's reputation as the scourge of the big four - earnt last season - and registered their second successive victory against United.
In March they beat Sir Alex Ferguson's side for the first time in 45 years by the same scoreline but this triumph was more comprehensive in every aspect.
As early as the 17th minute Fulham looked capable of emulating last season's heroics against the Red Devils thanks to a wonderful move started by Clint Dempsey.
The American floated in a long pass to Zamora who expertly chested the ball down into the path of Zoltan Gera but the Hungarian directed his shot too close to goalkeeper Tomasz Kuszczak when he had the goal at his mercy.
Duff should have produced a better conclusion to one run into the box but Fulham only had to wait until the 22nd minute to storm into the lead when they capitalised on an error by Scholes.
Fletcher passed to Scholes but the former England midfielder was too slow in reacting, allowing Murphy to snatch the ball from his feet and fire a 30-yard effort into the net.
Zamora should have made it 2-0 but nodded Gera's precision cross wide from six yards out after doing the hard work in outjumping Fletcher.
Quick thinking from Evra and Rooney created a half-chance for Anderson but Fulham reacted so rapidly to the threat that by the time he pulled the trigger he was blocked by a wall of white shirts.
United's problems deepened a minute into the second half when their patched-up defence was unpicked once more as Fulham extended their lead.
Duff supplied the cross to the far post where Dempsey was able to deflect the ball into the path of Zamora who rifled home from close range.
In desperate need of inspiration, a lacklustre United brought on Berbatov for Gibson and switched to a three-pronged strike force.
Needing a third goal to kill-off United, who were showing tentative signs of a fightback, Duff obliged in the 75th minute.
The visitors failed to clear their lines, allowing the brilliant Zamora to set-up Duff who smashed the ball home from 15 yards out.
Delirious Fulham fans chanted "we want four, we want four'' and Zamora would have given it to them had Kuszczak not made a superb late save.

KUALA LUMPUR 19 Dis.
Dia dituduh menerbitkan artikel bertajuk ‘Let‘s Send the Altantuya Murderers to Hell’ dalam blog www.malaysia-today.net, bertarikh 25 April 2008.
Beliau hanya berkata, polis masih berusaha memburu Raja Petra berikutan waran tangkap dikeluarkan terhadapnya mengikut Seksyen 4 (1)(b) Akta Hasutan.

MALAYSIA finally ended their 20-year gold drought in the SEA Games men’s football competition when they defeated Viet-nam 1-0 in the final at the Main Stadium of the National Sports Complex in Vientiane yesterday.
The national Under-23 boys, who came as non-medal prospects under Category B, pulled off one of the biggest upsets of the Games to win the gold medal – Malaysia’s 40th in the Laos SEA Games.
An own goal by Vietnam’s Mai Xuan Hop in the 85th minute was enough to seal victory for the gritty Malaysian side, who came alive in the second-half.
National coach K. Rajagopal was full of praise for his warriors, who created history.
“We achieved an historic feat in Vientiane,” said a jubilant Rajagopal, as the players garlanded all 20 gold medals onto him after the medal presentation ceremony.
“We started the competition by recording the biggest win of the football competition (since 1959) – thrashing Timor Leste 11-0. Then, we packed off defending champions Thailand (out of the semi-finals for the first time in 36 years).
“Today, we have won the gold medal away from home for the first time after 30 years (1979) and ... crowned champions after 20 years.

I need to protect many people. I don’t want to hurt the feelings of others,’’ said Bung Moktar when contacted over the phone Thursday.
