No New Posts   Q & A With Tan Sri Hassan Marican

March 27, 2011

HASSAN: Ya, saya kedekut. Tapi bukanlah dalam erti kata kedekut sebenar. Cuma saya tidak suka melihat pembaziran. Kalau nak kena belanja, walaupun RM10 juta, kalau kita kena belanja dan belanja betul, kita belanja. Tapi kalau kita nak belanja RM10 tapi tak berfaedah, saya kata tak perlu.

Saya mengaku saya kedekut, lagipun ia bukan duit saya, duit rakyat.

HASSAN: Saya selesa, lagipun ia hanyalah sebuah rumah.

HASSAN: Ya, saya pernah naik bas balik kampung. Apa salahnya.

Jadi inilah siapa Tan Sri sebenarnya.

HASSAN: Yalah, kita laburlah sikit sana sikit sini (ketawa).

Jumlah kakitangan Petronas, termasuk anak syarikat Malaysia International Shipping Corporation Berhad (MISC) sekarang 20,000 termasuk luar negara semua sekali 25,000.

HASSAN: Kalau nak kata kedekut, kedekutlah.

HASSAN: Betul, saya suka makan ulam. Ulam raja, pucuk janggus (gajus), pucuk putat.

No New Posts   Worst EPL Team of 2010

December 26, 2010

Yesterday we presented you with the best Premier League team of the season so far, as established through detailed, time-consuming and highly tedious analysis of your match ratings. Today we bring you the worst XI of the campaign so far, as nominated by some of our staff (OK, just me), who couldn't be bothered trawling through the ratings again. Don't complain: given that we're only at the midway point of the season, it seems appropriate to be doing things by halves.

The most difficult choice was what formation to play: the preponderance of strikers who've generally sunk so far means there is a temptation to go with an audacious 2-3-5 system, satisfied that even then the team would struggle to score. In the end, however, conformism got the better of us and we settled on a 4-3-3, meaning we had to leave out, with great reluctance, players such as Cameron Jerome, Jon Walters and Mauro Boselli.

However, the first name on the team-sheet practically picked himself – by announcing this week that he is the second-best young player in the history of football, or some such. Mario Balotelli clearly has talent and may one day fulfil his own prophecies of greatness but all he has shown for sure this season is that he has a spectacularly bad attitude. He has not behaved like a man determined to prove he is worth the £24m City paid for him – in fact for most of the time he has behaved like a man determined to start a fight, prowling around the pitch like a pub bully, seemingly on the verge of inquiring: "Did you spill my pint?" or "Are you looking at my bird?" And when he hasn't been glowering with menace or squaring up to someone, he's been posturing and gesticulating in a hilariously exaggerated way, suggesting that Balotelli may well be Italian for Basil Fawlty. He's only 20 and is adapting to a new league and life, so may mature and look back at his early days in England and laugh. For now, however, it is others who are laughing. Or just shaking their heads sadly.

Fernando Torres's attitude has been questioned this term, too. It may or may not be true that he hankers after a move away from Anfield, and it may or may not be true that he is still suffering from the injuries that nobbled him last season or is simply burnt out. Whatever the reasons, the fact is that only in flashes has he shown the ability that last year made him one of the most feared strikers in the world. Often he lacks decent support, but often, too, moves have broken down on him, as his touch and finishing are no longer reliable. And his speed, whichLiverpool cunningly seek to exploit by hoofing the ball in his general direction, does not seem what it was. He may get back to his best, but for much of the campaign Liverpool have had to cope without Torres, even when he's been on the pitch.

Everton have also had striking problems. David Moyes is usually shrewd when recruiting from the lower leagues but the evidence so far suggests Jermaine Beckford is out of his depth in the Premier League. Like considerate team-mates, however, Yakubu and Louis Saha have taken care not to show him up. Beckford has, at least, consistently put himself in the right positions but his seniors have not even been able to do that regularly and not only because they have been hampered, as ever, by their physical frailty. Saha's decline has been particularly disappointing, as at times last season he was one of the most dangerous forwards in the league.

When we said that we were deploying a 4-3-3 formation, we actually meant a 4-2-3. Because one of our chosen midfielders is Lee Cattermole, who, of course, will leave us short-handed with dumb regularity. If Cattermole learned as much as he earned, he might be worth the transfer fees that Steve Bruce keeps paying for him.

Stephen Ireland is much more than a useful player – or so he reckons – but Aston Villa fans have yet to see evidence of that and now it seems that the midfielder who proclaimed himself an upgrade on James Milner when he arrived at Villa Park is on his way out. He may – or may not – turn out to be a great signing for someone.

The signing of the season, lest we forget, was supposed to be Joe Cole. Many folks tipped him to spur a title charge by Liverpool – and why not, after all, he is better than Leo Messi. Well that hasn't quite worked out, has it? Sent off on his Anfield debut for a reckless lunge at Laurent Koscielny, Cole missed a penalty in his next outing and then he plateaued.

As for the defence, we were going to stick West Ham's left-back straight in there but, like Avram Grant, we don't know who he is. Herita Ilunga, who was mostly excellent last term, began the season there but he has fallen so far out of favour that he can no longer even get into the squad, so Grant seems to have asked several others, including Danny Gabbidon and Tal Ben-Haim, to take turns there, at least until the transfer window opens. Hell, let's stick with Ilunga. On the right we could easily put the former West Ham flop John Pantsil. At Fulham this season he has regressed towards the stage he was at before Roy Hodgson transformed him. That has been interesting to note, especially as Glen Johnson has lapsed back into unreliability at Anfield. Given the Pantsil precedent, it's hard to blame the manager for Johnson's mostly glum form so far this season.

At centre-back, Richard Dunne has had some pungent performances this season – indeed, he could be included on the basis of his madcap display in Aston Villa's 6-0 defeat at Newcastle alone. But the player with more red cards and own goals than any other in the history of the Premier League has always mixed the good with the comically bad and there have been times this term when he has been solid. The same, alas, cannot really be said of Wolves' Richard Stearman. Nor of Sébastien Squillaci – and given that he, unlike Stearman, is not a player who has earned his crack at the Premier League by helping the team get there in the first place, but a cut-price squad player whom Arsène Wenger deliberately signed when he could have afforded much better, his errors seem less forgivable.

Errors, Rob Green has made a few this season, would you believe? But Heurelho Gomes has made more. He may have atoned for his recent blunder against Chelsea by saving Didier Drogba's penalty but on balance he still has plenty to make up, including the expulsion against Internazionale and, most of all, the daft negligence that kept up Tottenham's tradition of gifting Manchester United goals at Old Trafford.

Worst team of the 2010-11 season so far

Gomes; Johnson, Squillaci, Stearman, Ilunga; Ireland, Cattermole, J Cole; Balotelli, Torres, Saha

No New Posts   Another Bus Accident in Malaysia

November 9, 2010

KUALA LUMPUR: The Commercial Vehicle Licensing Board (CVLB) has revoked the licences of two bus companies involved in two fatal accidents last month.

The board revoked the 11 licences of Syarikat Kuala Lumpur-Malacca Express Sdn Bhd and all 99 chartered bus licences of Syarikat Taipan Suria (MM2H) Sdn Bhd, said Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Datuk Seri Nazri Abdul Aziz.

The decision took immediate effect, he told reporters at the Parliament lobby yesterday.

“I strongly warn all commercial vehicle operators against being irresponsible when it comes to the safety of public transport users and road users.

“I won’t hesitate to take strict action such as suspending and revoking licences of errant operators,” he said.

Nazri said the action against Syarikat Kuala Lumpur-Malacca Express was taken following the accident in Negri Sembilan on Oct 10 which left 13 people dead. The bus driver also died in the crash.

Nazri said the company had contravened the Motor Vehicle Rules (Commercial Transportation) 1959 and the Commercial Vehicles Licensing Board Act 1987.

On Syarikat Taipan Suria, he said the action taken against the company was in connection with the accident on Oct 29 on the Karak Highway, where seven people lost their lives.

The company was also found to have also contravened the Motor Vehicle Rules (Commercial Transportation) 1959 and the Commercial Vehicles Licensing Board Act 1987.

Nazri said the company’s management also admitted that the bus involved in the crash, was operated by a third party.

Deputy Federal traffic chief ACP Mohd Puad Abd Latiff said the Syarikat Taipan Suria driver was under detention.

“He fractured his leg, and we will wait for him to recover from the trauma before taking further action,” he said.

CVLB director Datin Naimah Ramli said the companies have 30 days to appeal.

No New Posts   Live Crocodile On The Airplane!

October 28, 2010

ON Monday, a live crocodile was smuggled in a passenger’s bag onto a plane departing from an airport in Congo.

While on the plane, the reptile escaped and imagine the chaos it caused in the small aircraft. The crew and passengers ran for the ****pit and this caused an imbalance which led to a crash near Bandundu. The incident killed 20 but there was a survivor. The crocodile survived only to be later, hacked to death by machete-wielding locals on the ground.

We had our own incident of reptiles springing out of a bag on a conveyor belt at KLIA while on transit to Indonesia not long ago. Till now, we wonder how the bag full of reptiles managed to board a flight from Penang to KLIA en route Indonesia.

Wildlife smuggling is banned yet some endangered species manage to get to the skies. They are a threat to passenger security and safety onboard and so are terrorist threats.

In the wake of 9/11, the shoe bomber, the trans-Atlantic plot and the underwear bomber, the US has ensured there are layers of security built into the system. Each time there is an incident, the US responds by adding procedures. Once these measures are in place, they will become almost permanent. Today, we have to remove shoes, liquids are banned, our electric gadgets go through different scanners and we are exposed to full-body imaging scanners.

p3-broughton.JPGChairman of British Airways Martin Broughton wants the practise of forcing people to take off their shoes and have their laptops checked separately in security be dropped. “There is no need to ‘kowtow’ to the Americans every time they want something done."

This week, the chairman of British Airways Martin Broughton is taking on the US for their layers of air security which he calls ‘redundancies.’

He is telling airport operators, especially in Britain, not to “bow down too quickly at Washington’s demands for air security.”

He wants the practise of forcing people to take off their shoes and have their laptops checked separately in security be dropped.

“There is no need to ‘kowtow’ to the Americans every time they want something done.

“America does not do internally a lot of the things they demand that we do.

“We shouldn’t stand for that. We should say we’ll only do things which we consider to be essential and that you Americans also consider essential,” he said on Tuesday at the airport operator’s association conference.

His remarks have sparked a debate attracting more support from the travel trade across Europe to call for a review of the air security arrangements. Surprisingly, the International Air Transport Association which is normally quick to respond to issues, has remained silent on this.

Broughton wants to convince us that a review is key and his rationale is that all the redundant security checks burden European airports, airlines and passengers. Not only are the European airports having different set of security checks for US-bound passengers, but also airports in Asia and elsewhere or forget about landing on American soil.

This leaves us with one big question – will America heed Broughton’s and his allies’ calls for a review of its air security procedures or will it just brush aside the calls? Going by Broughton’s rationale, airport checks are onerous and have gone too far.

But how much checking is really enough to avoid a major catastrophe, beyond just dreadful reptiles showing up next to you in the cabin?

No New Posts   Datuk Sosilawati Lawiya is Dead

September 11, 2010

muka_hadapan.jpg

BANTING 12 Sept.

– Bernama

That’s according to the White House’s latest salary list, which reports a nearly $39 million annual payroll. This year, the White House has made the report, which it files with Congress every year, available online for the first time. The list itemizes the salary and title of every employee of the White House, except for the vice president’s office, which is technically an arm of the Senate.

The pay sheet also doesn’t include Obama, whose $400,000 annual salary is regulated by Congress. According to the latest study, the White House currently employs 469 people — down 17 positions from 2009.

June 28, 2010

The Pinta Island Tortoise
– This hard shelled turtle is more then just rare, he is unique. Being the only one remaining alive, he remains the sole survivor of the even diminishing species of Great Galapagos tortoises. Researchers are so desperate to find a female of the species that they are offering $10,000 to anyone who comes forward to offer a chance at saving the Pinta Island tortoise.

The Yangtze River Dolphin – This species of dolphin is found exclusively in China, and given the record expansion of China’s economic and social system, it has caused the Yangtze to become all but extinct as it has to compete for it’s habitat and limited resources of food with an enormous population.

The Vancouver Island Marmot – With only 75 currently listed as surviving in the wild, this little furry resident of the Vancouver mountains is getting some help from local conservationists to try to boost the numbers back up before it’s too late. Luckily, the little guys born raised in captivity are producing great numbers, and so look as though the species will be saved after all

The Seychelles Sheath-tailed Bat – No one is completely sure what is killing off the Sheath-tailed bat, and actually so little is known about their general patterns and behavior that no one knows what to do to increase their numbers either. But with fewer then 100 being reported in their native home of Madagascar, it’s clean something has to be done soon.

The Javan Rhino – The Javan isn’t the only species of Rhino that is quickly dying out, but it is the one that has the fastest reducing numbers, with less then 60 remaining in their native habitats across Indonesia and Vietnam.

The Hispid Hare – Being one of the only hares of it’s kind, the Hispid is a rabbit covered in bristly fur that lives in the Himalayan foothills around Nepal. There are now well under 100 in existence, and the numbers are continuing to decrease, even as conservationists attempt to breed them in captivity, an action that has so far proven unsuccessful.

The Northern Hairy-nosed Wombat – Located in Australia in the more tropical areas of the continent, the Hairy-nosed Wombat’s habitat has been decreasing, and so with it has it’s numbers. With less then 100 counted in the most recent environmental studies, massive funding by the local government has led to a huge conservation effort.

The Dwarf Water Buffalo – This bovine indigenous to the Philippines has seen a shocking reduction in the last hundred years. In the early 1900’s there was an estimated 10,000 alive in the region of Mindoro, and yet in 2002 they had found there to be somewhere between 50 – 200 alive. Illegal poaching still continues as the species dies out.

The Iberian Lynx – This tiny wildcat lives in the Andalusia region of Spain’s Iberian Peninsula. After it was found to have been killed down to just under 100 in 2001, the Spanish government began funding a mass conservation effort to save the species. The first three cubs born in captivity were announced in 2005, and from there success in further breeding has raised hopes that all is not lost for the Lynx.

The Red Wolf – Located in the southeastern United States regions, the red wolf is one of the smaller wolf species of the US. After a dramatic decrease to only 30 living Red Wolves, conservation efforts across the country were funded in earnest, and 200 were bred in captivity. Today, just over a hundred live, giving hope that they will be saved.

France striker Nicolas Anelka has been sent home from the World Cup after verbally insulting coach Raymond Domenech during the Mexico game.

The Chelsea star missed training on Saturday after reports of a row with the France coach during their 2-0 loss.

And he later refused to apologise when asked to by French Football Federation president Jean-Pierre Escalettes.

An FFF statement said the 31-year-old's half-time comments to Domenech were "totally unacceptable".

The statement continued: "Faced by the refusal of the player to publicly apologise, he (Escalettes) took the decision in total agreement with the coach and the official members of the delegation present to exclude Nicolas Anelka from the squad."

France captain Patrice Evra also attended the meeting with Anelka at the French training camp in Knysa.

And Evra accused a "traitor" within the French camp of leaking the story to the media.

"The problem of France is not Anelka, but the traitor among us.

"We must eliminate the traitor from the group because he wants to hurt the team," the Manchester United full-back said.

Anelka, a League and FA Cup double winner with Chelsea this season, has won 71 international caps.

He scored twice on his debut against England in 1999 but later spent three years in the international wilderness after refusing to play for Les Bleus under coach Jacques Santini.

No New Posts   Cruel Israeli Attack Aid Ship to Gaza Two Confirm Dead

May 31, 2010

[video=www.youtube.com/v/wExyiIoNndc]

Israeli forces have attacked a flotilla of aid-carrying ships aiming to break the country's siege on Gaza.

Up to 16 people were killed and dozens injured when troops stormed the Freedom Flotilla early on Monday, the Israeli Army Radio said.

The flotilla was attacked in international waters, 65km off the Gaza coast.

Footage from the flotilla's lead vessel, the Mavi Marmara, showed armed Israeli soldiers boarding the ship and helicopters flying overhead.

Al Jazeera's Jamal Elshayyal, on board the Mavi Marmara, said Israeli troops had used live ammunition during the operation.

The Israeli Army Radio said soldiers opened fire "after confronting those on board carrying sharp objects".

Free Gaza Movement, the organisers of the flotilla, however, said the troops opened fire as soon as they stormed the ships.

Israeli military also reports that four soldiers were injured and taken to hospital.

They also said the ships were now being towed to the Israeli town of Haifa, instead of Ashdod to avoid waiting journalists.

Earlier, the Israeli navy had contacted the captain of the Mavi Marmara, asking him to identify himself and say where the ship was headed.

Shortly after, two Israeli naval vessels had flanked the flotilla on either side, but at a distance.

Organisers of the flotilla carrying 10,000 tonnes of humanitarian aid then diverted their ships and slowed down to avoid a confrontation during the night.

They also issued all passengers life jackets and asked them to remain below deck.

Al Jazeera’s Ayman Mohyeldin, reporting from Jerusalem, said the Israeli action was surprising.

"All the images being shown from the activists on board those ships show clearly that they were civilians and peaceful in nature, with medical supplies on board. So it will surprise many in the international community to learn what could have possibly led to this type of confrontation," he said.

Meanwhile, Israeli police have been put on a heightened state of alert across the country to prevent any civil disturbances.

Protests

Condemnation has been quick to pour in after the Israeli action.

Thousands of Turkish protesters tried to storm the Israeli consulate in Istanbul soon after the news of the operation broke. The protesters shouted "Damn Israel" as police blocked them.

Turkey is also reported to have summoned the Israeli ambassador to lodge a protest.

"(The interception on the convoy) is unacceptable ... Israel will have to endure the consequences of this behaviour," the Turkish foreign ministry said in a statement.

Ismail Haniya, the Hamas leader in Gaza, has also dubbed the Israeli action as "barbaric".

Hundreds of pro-Palestinian activists, including a Nobel laureate and several European legislators, were with the flotilla, aiming to reach Gaza in defiance of an Israeli embargo.

But Israel had said it would not allow the flotilla to reach the Gaza Strip and vowed to stop the six ships from reaching the coastal Palestinian territory.

The flotilla had set sail from a port in Cyprus on Sunday and aimed to reach Gaza by Monday morning.

Israel said the boats were embarking on "an act of provocation" against the Israeli military, rather than providing aid, and that it had issued warrants to prohibit their entrance to Gaza.

It asserted that the flotilla would be breaking international law by landing in Gaza, a claim the organisers rejected.

No New Posts   Bicultural Marriage What Happen to the Child?

May 30, 2010

201006-omag-bremer-101-300x205.jpg

Nine years ago, I danced my newborn daughter around my North Carolina living room to the music of Free to Be...You and Me, the '70s children's classic whose every lyric about tolerance and gender equality I had memorized as a girl growing up in California. My Libyan-born husband, Ismail, sat with her for hours on our screened porch, swaying back and forth on a creaky metal rocker and singing old Arabic folk songs, and took her to a Muslim sheikh who chanted a prayer for long life into her tiny, velvety ear. She had espresso eyes and lush black lashes like her father's, and her milky-brown skin darkened quickly in the summer sun. We named her Aliya, which means "exalted" in Arabic, and agreed we would raise her to choose what she identified with most from our dramatically different backgrounds.

I secretly felt smug about this agreement—confident that she would favor my comfortable American lifestyle over his modest Muslim upbringing. Ismail's parents live in a squat stone house down a winding dirt alley outside Tripoli. Its walls are bare except for passages from the Qur'an engraved onto wood, its floors empty but for thin cushions that double as bedding at night. My parents live in a sprawling home in Santa Fe with a three-car garage, hundreds of channels on the flat-screen TV, organic food in the refrigerator, and a closetful of toys for the grandchildren. I imagined Aliya embracing shopping trips to Whole Foods and the stack of presents under the Christmas tree, while still fully appreciating the melodic sound of Arabic, the honey-soaked baklava Ismail makes from scratch, the intricate henna tattoos her aunt drew on her feet when we visited Libya. Not once did I imagine her falling for the head covering worn by Muslim girls as an expression of modesty.

Last summer we were celebrating the end of Ramadan with our Muslim community at a festival in the parking lot behind our local mosque. Children bounced in inflatable fun houses while their parents sat beneath a plastic tarp nearby, shooing flies from plates of curried chicken, golden rice, and baklava.

Aliya and I wandered past rows of vendors selling prayer mats, henna tattoos, and Muslim clothing. When we reached a table displaying head coverings, Aliya turned to me and pleaded, "Please, Mom—can I have one?"

She riffled through neatly folded stacks of headscarves while the vendor, an African-American woman shrouded in black, beamed at her. I had recently seen Aliya cast admiring glances at Muslim girls her age. I quietly pitied them, covered in floor-length skirts and long sleeves on even the hottest summer days, as my best childhood memories were of my skin laid bare to the sun: feeling the grass between my toes as I ran through the sprinkler on my front lawn; wading into an icy river in Idaho, my shorts hitched up my thighs, to catch my first rainbow trout; surfing a rolling emerald wave off the coast of Hawaii. But Aliya envied these girls and had asked me to buy her clothes like theirs. And now a headscarf.

In the past, my excuse was that they were hard to find at our local mall, but here she was, offering to spend ten dollars from her own allowance to buy the forest green rayon one she clutched in her hand. I started to shake my head emphatically "no," but caught myself, remembering my commitment to Ismail. So I gritted my teeth and bought it, assuming it would soon be forgotten.

That afternoon, as I was leaving for the grocery store, Aliya called out from her room that she wanted to come.

A moment later she appeared at the top of the stairs—or more accurately, half of her did. From the waist down, she was my daughter: sneakers, bright socks, jeans a little threadbare at the knees. But from the waist up, this girl was a stranger. Her bright, round face was suspended in a tent of dark cloth like a moon in a starless sky.

No New Posts   India Shocks Defending Champions

May 10, 2010

IPOH: Defending champions India kept up their smashing form in the Sultan Azlan Shah Cup hockey tournament and scored a 4-3 win over world champions Australia yesterday.

It was a memorable win for India, whose last victory over Australia was in 2003 in a four-nation tournament in Sydney.

India took a 3-0 lead in the first half with two goals by Tushar Khandker (19th, 33rd) and the other by skipper Rajpal Singh (22nd). Australia pulled two goals back early in the second half with Trent Milton and Christopher Ciriello scoring in the 38th and 40th minutes respectively.

Rare victory: India’s Tushar Khandker (left) and Shivender Singh both scored in the win over Australia yesterday.

s_54tushar.jpg

Shivender Singh put India 4-2 up in the 61st minute before Mark Peterson replied in the 69th minute.

India remained on top of the standings on 10 points while Australia have six points and are still in with a chance to make the final.

India’s assistant coach Harender Singh complimented his players for their ability to keep their cool and also to execute the game plan well.

“It was a tough match but the early goals helped us. We made some silly mistakes to let them back into the game in the second half. But the players rallied well to defend the lead and take the match,†he said.

South Korea bounced back into contention for a place in the final after demolishing China 5-3 in an earlier match.

The win gave the Koreans seven points from four matches and they face a must win situation in their remaining fixtures against Australia tomorrow and against Pakistan on Saturday.

The Koreans trailed by a third minute penalty corner goal by Sun Long before they equalised in the 25th minute through Cho Suk-hoon, who beat goalkeeper Su Rifeng from the top of the D.

Nam Hyun-woo made a penalty corner conversion in the 29th minute to put South Korea in front and You Hyo-sik stretched the lead to 3-1 in the 32nd minute.

China hit back right after resumption with Yu Yang scoring off a melee in the 37th minute but South Korea regained their two-goal lead through Yoon Sung-hoon in the 39th minute.

China were reduced to 10 men when Sun Zhixin was yellow carded and South Korea forced a penalty corner in the 46th minute, off which Lee Seung-il scored. The Chinese however reduced the deficit in the 59th minute through Meng Jun.
